The Head Cast: My White Whale

Every builder has a white whale. Mine is a McElroy head cast.

I have the body. I have the mechanical knowledge. I have the tools and the materials. I've built figures with McElroy-style mechanics before — floating eyes, upper lip sneer, raising eyebrows, the full control post. I know what I'm doing with metal stock and brass rods.

What I'm missing is the face. And not just any face — a cast from an original McElroy head. George McElroy's sculpt. Those specific proportions, that particular expression, the features that have made these figures unforgettable for nearly ninety years.

I know they exist. A small number of casts have circulated quietly within the collector community over the decades. Greg Claassen has worked from original casts. Others have too. It's a world of private trades and quiet conversations between people who trust each other.

I'm working on becoming one of those people.

In the meantime — if you're reading this and you know something, please reach out. I am very serious about this project, very respectful of the tradition, and very, very motivated.

Alessio
